Dian Malouf’s jewelry designs capture the wild spirit of the south

Photo by Brooke Malouf Dian Malouf is the female Kinky Friedman of South Texas, though you won’t find a Cuban cigar hanging from her lips. Actually, you might if the price is right: Malouf did do a rap video to help promote a particular line of her jewelry, called Go Girl! Imagine a distinguished South Texas belle donning a side-tipped cap, coached to say “mutha” and “brutha.”

To continue the comparison, Malouf and Friedman are both larger-than-life bards. Friedman’s a celebrated detective novelist, humorist and Texas Monthly contributor; Malouf chronicles South Texas via jewelry as bold and different as the ranchers she archives in her hard-wrought series of books.

Before being an author or jewelry maker, Malouf is an enterprising spirit. She was conducting the 10 years of research for Cattle Kings of Texas, her debut print effort, when she started searching for a commemorative silver ring. That she found nothing is a boon to jewelry lovers everywhere.

Making Jewelry
Malouf has been making jewelry since the early 1990s. If you’ve seen her collections at Julian Gold in Texas or at Saks Fifth Avenue stores across the nation, you recognize her style instantly. It’s chunky, but refined. It’s thematic, but not hokey. It’s chock-full of materials and stones you may never have seen before—and probably won’t again, at least in Malouf’s future lines. She is always looking to work with something different.

Malouf just finished designing this year’s fall line. Amid a sea of papers and in 101 degree weather, she describes the stones she’s breaking out with thoughts toward cooler weather and autumn dresses: An Australian light blue larimar with a chocolate matrix. Greens, grays and chocolate browns. A rare black moonstone that she bought in Florence years ago, which she’s surrounding with diamonds for its debut.

“I’m doing some black and white peanut wood, and it’s now extinct,” she adds. “It’s fossilized, comes from Australia. There’s no more of it. I bought the last of it two years ago.”

Malouf's new line, Dian Does Diamonds, is wearable day or night. It all sounds very fancy. But Malouf is a practical girl at heart. She wants to offer women jewelry they can wear every day, as well as for specific occasions. She’s designed a line with gold and silver named Carpools to Caviar. Her recent diamond line delivers lots of the girl’s best friends enrobed in lustrous gold and silver. It is, surprisingly, very wearable.

Malouf also makes themed lines. The aforementioned Go Girl! line is part of her modern-rustic styled “Endearings,” with inscriptions such as “Mamacita” and “Diva” on their rectangular tops. But the Go Girl! ring is marketed as an inspirational affirmation for women. Several women have written Malouf about the ring’s symbol of support for friends who have gotten married, a new job or even a debilitating diagnosis. With proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the ring has generated $40,000 to help end breast cancer.

Malouf’s pieces say a lot: Slogans and sayings are becoming common in her collections. She recently finished a line of unisex bands that include the messages “hitched” and “unhitched.” They can be economical alternatives to wedding bands—or divorce papers.

“I hear so many people that get divorced, and it’s such a change of lifestyle for anyone to have had a regular life and then have to change it,” Malouf muses. “Some people are really happy, and some people are really sad, and I just started thinking, ‘Well, they’re unhitched.’ And if a woman is unhitched, let her tell the world! Some people are tickled to death to be unhitched.”

Malouf, for the record, is tickled to be married to her tax attorney husband, Don.
