The Swine Flu in Texas

To counteract the threat of a growing swine flu epidemic, Gov. Rick Perry on Monday requested 850,000 courses of antiviral medication from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The request amounts to 25 percent of the state's allotment, Perry said. It will augment more than 840,000 courses that Texas already has on hand via a purchase authorized by the Texas Legislature in 2007.

Mexico's health department says the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert level to 4. It has verified human-to-human swine flu.

14 schools in Texas will be closed at least for the next week. One was a highschool where two cases were confirmed.

I don't think any of us should panic, but taking precautions is always good. Mexico is always a worry. The drug wars are bloody and terrible. This flu outbreak is causing schools and businesses to close. Then there was an earthquake in Mexico City today. Our concern in Texas is always some large refugee type of thing happening. It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. We can all pray that Mexico will be able to handle these things.

Meanwhile we need to stay calm, wash our hands frequently, and avoid travel to Mexico for now.
