Driving Away
Majestic Mountains
We’re watching a low bank of clouds sitting atop Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Just before sunrise, they start to ease toward the western most prominent point of the entire range, El Capitan.
Buried Treasure
Driving through Ochiltree County towards Perryton, its county seat, you can see for miles. Houses are few and far between until you arrive on the outskirts of the modest-sized town, population 8,000.
Lubbock? Yep, Lubbock!
As you stand on the plains of West Texas and feel the warm breeze fanning your face, you experience the undeniable pioneering spirit that tamed this terrain, officially dubbed Lubbock on March 16, 1909. You feel a bit like one of the folks who travelled by train to settle in this new land
The Green Scene
Surrounded by a canopy of towering oak and magnolia trees and inconspicuously set back from the street, The Greenhouse www.theGreenHouseSpa.net is a gathering place for affluent ladies searching for the definitive indulgence.
Driving Away
The Museum of Modern Art admitted a 1960s Airstream Bambi Travel Trailer to its iconic automotive collection, and, suddenly, the retro piece of Americana had new life—and so did the businesses of vintage trailer restorers. Texas Vintage Trailers’ Eric Stoltz is one of those restorers, the only full-service trailer restorer in Texas. A master carpenter and licensed commercial building contractor, he now prefers doing total restorations of 1950s trailers at his New Braunfels shop.
The Painted Churches
Known as the Painted Churches, this collection of quaint wooden and brick structures consists of turn-of-20th-century houses of worship with Gothic Revival windows, facades clad in white frame siding or stone and steeples raised to the heavens.
West Texas Oasis
After eight days of roughin’ it in her Houston home without electricity—due to Hurricane Ike—photojournalist Debora Smail took off in her beige Volkswagen Beetle. She headed out on a quest to find out why Marathon, a 5-square-mile town in West Texas, lures more than an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 big city folks a year.
King For A Day
I felt a little sheepish, a little self-conscious, a little embarrassed when I entered Austin’s El Rey, “The King,” a gentleman’s spa that offers far more than a clip. But I soon learned that the female professional groomers at the club don’t spruce you up like a show dog, but instead restore you, like a vintage sports car, with a good wax and shine. I still worried that when all was said and done, I’d feel I squandered time.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
This mysterious terra cotta badland, referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," calls out to the adventuresome to be explored. A daylong horseback ride or challenging hike will take you to this home of the famous Lighthouse rock formation.
In Celebration of Shrimp Shacks
Shrimp shacks along the Texas coast draw cars off two-lane, coastal roads with magnetic force. Drivers on their way somewhere else find themselves easing into gravel-strewn parking lots, heading inside, and emerging with an icy pound or two of the Gulf’s richest treasure.
You’ve Never Seen a Spa Like This in Texas
The first picture of Lake Conroe’s upcoming resort has seen the light, and it teases La Torretta Del Lago’s clean, modern European motif. COO Marc Leffman says each lavish room features a mini-bar, two 42-inch flat screens and a “Texas-style” bath.
Floating and Feasting
When the owners of Far Flung Outdoor Center in Terlingua teamed up with Chef François Maeder, owner of Crumpet’s Restaurant and Bakery in San Antonio, they created a unique expedition called the Gourmet River Rafting Adventure. This three-day, 20-mile journey takes rafters down the Rio Grande as it winds its way through the heart of Big Bend NationalPark.

Welcome to Wimberley
Hidden in the midst of magnificent cypress trees lies a picturesque village that looks almost like a painting. Along the banks of a cool spring-fed creek sits Wimberley, Texas‚ located just north of San Marcos, in between Austin and San Antonio.
